Language immersion is an educational approach in which students are taught the curriculum content through the medium of a second language. In this way, immersion students not only learn the content, but also gain knowledge of the language in which it is taught.

Forest Lake Area Schools Partial Immersion Program

The uniqueness of the immersion program is that Spanish is not taught as a separate subject. Instead, Spanish becomes the language of instruction for part of the curriculum. Students then acquire Spanish through interesting and meaningful activities in the language as they learn the concepts of the various subjects included in the elementary curriculum. Research studies show that learning a second language at an early age has a positive effect on intellectual growth and leaves students with more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language, and improved listening skills.

Our immersion program operates as a school-within-a-school at both the elementary and secondary levels. This means that each group of immersion students is considered important and essential members of the entire student body. Students who participate in the elementary program have the opportunity to continue in immersion programming through junior and senior high school.
